“I have known this Love, this sovereign of the heart, this soul of our souls;
all it has ever gotten me is one kiss and twenty kicks in the ass.” — Voltaire, Candide
Freshwater Theatre is proud to present the regional premiere of Ruben Carbajal’s bitingly serious comedy The Gifted Program, directed by Freshwater Co-Artistic Director Ben Layne.
In 1986, the very bottom of Racine, Wisconsin’s high school social food chain consists of the last remaining members of the Dungeons & Dragons’ club: four socially awkward refugees from a defunct program for gifted and talented students, who have been thrown into the harsh arena of an inner-city public high school. When one of them is revealed to be the mysterious radio call-in Romeo courting the school’s most popular girl, the simple pursuit of an education becomes a fight for survival.
